Enrique Graue Wiechers is a Mexican ophthalmologist and academician. He was born on April 17, 1951, in Mexico City, Mexico. He completed his medical degree at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1974 and received his specialization in Ophthalmology from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in 1978.
Graue has served as the Director of the UNAM’s Faculty of Medicine since 2015. He is also a Member of the Mexican Academy of Surgery and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Graue is recognized internationally for his research into eye diseases, especially glaucoma.
In September 2019, he was appointed as the rector of UNAM, the most prestigious university in Mexico and one of the most respected in Latin America. As UNAM’s rector, he has prioritized gender equality, academic excellence, research, and innovation. Graue is also a staunch advocate for the importance of the arts and culture, and their role in education and social development.
